Introduction
Welcome to Received Pronunciation for speakers of General American English.
This training program has been specifically designed to assist General American speakers in mastering Received Pronunciation.
The tasks in this course have been created in a structured order to help you develop confidence in repeating the sounds of RP in a natural manner.
The first part of the course is divided into sections to help you train the articulators for specific target sounds. Each section includes an articulation exercise, followed by a word list exercise and then a phrase repetition exercise.
Please note that this course is still work in progress. The price has been discounted to reflect this. For this reason, some sections may be missing and if you see an X symbol, this means the content is missing and is due to be uploaded. Your feedback would be extremely useful as it will help me make adjustments and improvements to this course. Do not hesitate to reach out to me directly or leave a comment.
The content uploaded so far is focused on helping you train the articulators. The second part of the course will be focused on achieving natural fluency. This will go beyond the ability to mimic the sounds of RP with perfect pronunciation with an emphasis of speaking RP in a more fluent manner. We’ll explore the use of weaker forms, glottal stops, flapping and intonation.
While American actors shouldn’t have difficulty perfecting pronunciation of individual words, being able to pass as a native speaker of RP in modern Britain requires more skill. These exercises will be particularly helpful for actors who want to achieve this.
